On December 26, the Ministry of Civil Affairs held a national civil affairs video conference. The conference summarized the new progress made in civil affairs in 2020, which announced that the pace of development of elderly care services in China will accelerate in 2020, and the number of various elderly care beds will reach 8.075 million, a year-on-year increase of 7%.

Minister of Civil Affairs Li Jiheng introduced at the meeting that by the end of 2019, China's population aged 60 and over will reach 254 million. During the "14th five year plan" period, China will enter a moderately aging society. In 2025, the population aged 60 and over will exceed 300 million, and the task of coping with population aging is the most important.


It was learned from the meeting that accelerating the development of basic elderly care services will be one of the key tasks of the Ministry of civil affairs in 2021, including:


Strengthen the construction of basic elderly care service system


We will improve support policies for home-based and community-based elderly care


Improve the quality of elderly care services


We will strengthen the construction of a contingent of professionals in elderly care services


Comprehensively promote the coordinated development of elderly care services and industries


We will thoroughly implement the transformation and upgrading project of support service facilities (nursing homes) for the very poor.


Li Jiheng said that during the "14th five year plan" period, the civil affairs department will actively comply with the growing needs of the elderly and their families, improve the top-level design of basic elderly care services, promote the coordination of home community institutions, promote the combination of medical care and health care, encourage grass-roots practice and innovation, and speed up the construction of "four beams and eight pillars" of the basic elderly care service system.
